Call it naivety, but we were pinning a little bit of hope on EDF Energy bucking the trend of its price-hiking rivals by leaving its tariffs unchanged.

But, like the England football team’s limp performance in an international tournament, or the actual appearance of the seemingly highly-attractive person you’ve hooked up with from an online dating  site, the reality has been that of grimly inevitable disappointment.

The firm has announced rises in the price of gas and electricity by 15.4 per cent and 4.5 per cent respectively. Predictably, the company blamed increases in the price of wholesale energy.

EDF’s announcement means that we’ve now got a ‘full house’ of price rises from the big six energy firms. Energy watchdog Ofgem is currently undertaking an investigation into the energy companies behaviour. It recently called in forensic accountancy firm BDO to see if the companies were understating their profits in order to justify their price rises.
