Euro NCAP, the organisation which tests the safety of new cars and rates them accordingly, has published its ‘Best in Class’ awards for all 53 cars which appeared on the European market last year. The top achievers per category are as follows:
Small off-road 4×4 category: Audi Q3

Small MPV category: Mercedes B Class

Runners-up included the Chevrolet Malibu, Mercedes M Class, Toyota Yaris, Lexus CT200h, Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, Hyundai ix20, and BMW X1.
Euro NCAP also tested four new electric cars, which it subjects to the same rogours as its petrol counterparts. The Nissan Leaf achieved the maximum possible five star rating. The worst performing car was the Dacia Duster, which mustered three stars. This year, Euro NCAP has introduced stricter standards by increasing the minimum score in the pedestrian assessment, which it says reflects improvements introduced by car manufacturers over the past few years.
