Well, here’s a turn up for the books – it looks like British Gas has decided to accept the challenge slapped down by energy watchdog Ofgem of making its bills ‘more transparent’, and has issued a pledge to advise customers what tariffs they should be on so they don't paying over the odds.

From next month, all British Gas customers’ bills will come with a comparison table to see what deal’s best for them.

Managing director of energy at British Gas Ian Peters, said: "Empowering customers with clear, tailored information about how much energy they use and how much it costs will help them benefit from any savings available to them. British Gas is the first energy supplier to adopt this very clear approach. If other energy suppliers follow our lead even more customers will reap the benefit.”

Energy customers everywhere might be forgiven for raising a quizzical eyebrow to full mast – after all, it wasn’t so long ago that British Gas was ramping up prices, getting hit with multi-million pound fines for mishandling of complaints and limping to poor finishes in customer satisfaction surveys. The good news is that where one of the ‘Big Six’ energy companies leads, the rest usually follow – you’ve only got to look at last year’s price hikes, and the relatively stingy cuts to tariffs a few months ago. But of course, British Gas’ comparison chart will only show you the deals from, yes, you guessed it, British Gas itself.

That means that to know if your energy deal really is the best one for you, you’ll have to ring up all the suppliers all up individually….unless there was a way of comparing and contrasting all the offers from all the suppliers in one handy place, say oh, a website. Surely such a thing can’t possibly exist? Oh, wait…it does. And you’ve found it!
