What would you reach for if, god forbid, your home was on fire? Well, if the latest round of research conducted by this very website is anything to go by, most people would reach for their laptop over their family photo album.
25% of the 1,800 people we quizzed said that their laptop – and the digital contents therein – would be their first port of call, compared to 21% who’d head straight to the photo album.
But despite being in second place overall, women still consider the family photo album the most precious item with 28 per cent of them choosing to take that first compared to just 14 per cent of men.
10% of people surveyed also said that they enjoy a cigarette in bed, risking starting a house fire.
Head of home services at Gocompare.com, Mark Greening pondered: "Fortunately very few people ever experience the tragedy of a serious house fire but it is worrying how many people are putting their and others lives at risk by smoking in bed. Fires kill and even minor ones can cause a huge amount of damage from smoke and water. Adequate home insurance to replace your personal belongings can reduce the impact of such an occurrence, but prevention is much better than cure and no amount of insurance cover can save a life.”
