Motorists - beware the wrath of Ogden

She's out to give you a spanking at renewal time...
"The only way to be sure you get the best price possible for your specific circumstances is to shop around"

Who'd be a driver at the moment?

If you're not contending with clogged up roads then there's the price of petrol, tax, and of course, car insurance.

After a few years of declining, it's on the rise again.

Last year an increase in insurance premium tax took it from 9.5%-10%, and in June its set to rise a further 2%.

But even more bad news is on the way, with the Ministry of Justice deciding to reduce the discount rate - sinisterly known as the Ogden rate -  used in calculations for compensation payments for people who suffer long-term injuries in road traffic accidents.

In short this means Ogden's pushing prices up.

According to the number crunchers at PwC, most people will be hit by an increase of about £75.

But the over-65s could have £300 added to their premium, while drivers under 22 years old could see already exorbitant prices rise by a further £1,000.

Matt Oliver, car insurance expert at Gocompare.com lamented: "First IPT increases and now this!  Drivers are being hit with news about rising costs left, right and centre at the moment.

"When it comes to car insurance, there are likely to be only two things that motorists need to understand - car insurance premiums are going up this year and the only way to be sure you get the best price possible for your specific circumstances is to shop around when your renewal comes through."

The pundits are taking the view that car insurance prices are likely to continue to rise this year - in fact, some have argued that they have actually been artificially low for too long.

But different insurers will always take a slightly different view of you and your car, when it comes to insurance risk.

Oliver advises: "When prices are rising, it is more important than ever not to accept the premium your current insurer is offering, but check to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere.

"The savings from shopping around this year could be significant and drivers need to give themselves enough time at renewal to do a proper job, rather than just letting their insurer roll them over for another year."

So don't let Ogden raid your pockets - check your cheapest car insurance quotes and tell your current insurer "ta-ra, chuck" at renewal time
