Numerous drivers in Lancashire have been warned of the dangers of leaving valuable items in their cars.
According to the Lancashire Evening Post, more than 1,400 motorists were left with letters telling them about valuables left on display in their vehicles - which could result in a car insurance claim should someone break in to steal the items.
Inspector June Chessell, of Fulwood Police, said: "I was staggered by the number of vehicles left with property openly on view and would appeal to motorists to lock things away in the boot."
She added that analysis of incidents over the past 12 months had highlighted that vehicles were more likely to get broken into if property was left unattended and on display.
Vehicle crime in the UK has fallen by more than 50 per cent since 1997, but 1.7 million incidents still took place between 2005-06.
