New device targets drinkers

A new device has been launched that can prevent a driver from starting their car if they are
over the alcohol limit.
The Alcolock 500 is a breath alcohol ignition interlock device which works by using a police-standard
breathalyser that will prevent the vehicle from starting if the driver fails.
It can be set to a pre-prescribed limit or to zero tolerance, which could come in handy for
safety-conscious drivers or fleet managers.
Commenting on the product, Robert Gifford of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety
said: "Drink driving is a problem that needs a multiple solution.
"We need new ways of dealing with the habitual offender and the Alcolock is one such solution."
In Sweden, legislation is being drafted to make the Alcolock a legal requirement for buses and trucks.
The UK's Department for Transport's Think! campaign is currently in full swing with its traditional
Christmas advertising programme.
