Total driving ban for drink drivers 'a possibility'

Drivers who risk more than their car insurance premiums by getting behind the wheel when drunk could face a
total ban on driving as a punishment in the future.
This is according to road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick, who told Channel 4's News at Noon that this could be
the result on consultations to be held in the spring.
He told the programme that "there's always been a case which has been put forward" for introducing a complete
ban, adding: "We've said we'll consult on drink driving in the new year and that will be an opportunity to
discuss that."
In addition, he commented that this Christmas' annual drink driving campaign was focusing particularly on young
male motorists because of their vulnerability and their likelihood of being offenders.
According to the government's Think! road safety website, a drink driving endorsement can stay on a motorist's
licence for 11 years.
