'Police must get tough on drink drivers'

The declining number of drivers failing breath tests during the recent festive period highlights the need for strong enforcement, it has been claimed.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the 20 per cent fall in drink drivers should act as a prompt for police to receive new powers that could help keep this trend going.
Kevin Clinton, Head of Road Safety at RoSPA, stated that the figures showed that drink driving "is not inevitable".
"Enforcement needs to be high profile and visible so that it is a deterrent as well as a means to catch people who have been irresponsible enough to drink and drive," he added.
Mr Clinton went on to call for the drink drive limit to be cut from 80mg to 50mg to reduce people's chances of being involved in an accident or collision.
Police in Devon and Cornwall also recently reported a decline in the number of drink drivers caught over Christmas and new year.
