Car insurance 'being enforced more stringently'

Everyone who owns a vehicle is being urged by the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) to make sure they have car insurance.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for BIBA, explained that "continuous insurance enforcement is a new offence" and warned motorists to purchase car insurance.

He said that the new system will compare vehicle registrations with insurance information.

"If you've got a vehicle with no insurance then you're going to get … letters sent out, followed up by penalty notices," said Mr Trudgill.

He added that BIBA is using "the calm before the storm" to publicise the dangers of uninsured driving and raising awareness of the issue.

Approximately 160 deaths on UK roads each year are caused by uninsured motorists, according to the Motor Insurers' Bureau.
