Police urge drivers to protect satnavs

Police in Humberside are hoping to reduce incidents of vehicle crime, which potentially result in car insurance claims for affected automobile owners.

Officers are urging local people to remember to remove valuables from their vehicles before leaving them unattended.

They suggest that satellite navigation (satnav) systems are among thieves' favourite swag and can be tempting to passing criminals.

Even the sucker marks the devices leave on windscreens can be enough to attract a criminal, the force warns.

"It only takes a minute to remove things like satellite navigation systems and brackets or wiping the mark off your windscreen and this could be the difference between you being the victim of a theft or not," stated Acting Detective Chief Inspector Steve Clay.

Officers are conducting patrols throughout the area but urge drivers to take some responsibility for their own vehicles.

The BBC states that up to 250,000 of the devices were stolen in the UK during 2006.
