Sales of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) rose during the third quarter of 2007, according to the latest figures from Experian.
The firm has noted an increase of eight per cent and three per cent for SUVs and MPVs respectively for the third quarter of last year, when compared with the same period of 2006.
These figures come despite a drop in all other categories, according to the data from Experian's business strategies division and the DVLA.
"In the last five years, the number of used SUVs sold has more than doubled and recent sales have shown no signs of slowing. Sales of MPVs have increased by around 90 per cent in the last five years," said Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division.
The biggest fall was witnessed in the upper medium car segment, with a nine per cent dip in the third quarter of 2007 compared with Q3 2006.
Sales of diesel cars - bought by people who could compare car insurance policies for the best deals - also rose in the quarter, while fuel cars fell four per cent.
Last week, the Retail Motor Industry's National Franchised Dealers Association suggested now could be a good time to get a deal on a new car, ahead of the first new registration cars in March.
