The West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority (WYPTA) has revealed that 22.9 per cent of cars in the HD1 postcode area do not have car insurance, according to reports.

An article in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner has shown that the HD1 area is ninth in a list of the top 20 areas in West Yorkshire for vehicles without the required motor insurance.

Bradford topped the list for the area with the most uninsured drivers, according to the newspaper, while it also was named at the top of a league table from the WYPTA of hotspots for crashes involving drivers between 21 and 29 years old.

Councillor Martyn Bolt, Kirklees council's cabinet member for transport, said that the council wants vehicles without car insurance "out of the way".

"There's no way of knowing if they are roadworthy and if they are involved in an accident there's no way of forcing the driver to pay up except for civil litigation," he told the newspaper.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association recently highlighted the introduction of continuous insurance enforcement, aimed at stamping out the problems of drivers without car insurance.
