Road safety message for young men this Valentine's Day

Male drivers are being urged to consider their partner's safety this Valentine's Day.

A national campaign entitled For My Girlfriend has been launched to persuade men to drive responsibly, if not for their own sake then for that of their girlfriend.

Councillor Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for transport and streetscene at Sheffield city council, said: "Research has found that male drivers are less concerned about killing themselves when considering the risks of driving. However, the same research showed that these male drivers were motivated to take care by the thought of killing a friend or girlfriend."

The council is teaming up with Yorkshire Ambulance Service and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to deliver the road safety message throughout the county.

A demonstration is set to take place in the town centre on Valentine's Day to highlight the potential consequences of driving irresponsibly, with casualties to be cut out of a crashed car.

Earlier this year, the campaign produced a number of posters to educate young males about the impact dangerous driving could have on their partner.
