The Highways Agency has released a new DVD featuring TV presenter Carol Smillie to raise awareness of the risks surrounding towing a trailer or caravan.
With the warmer weather just over the horizon, Britons are being urged to consider their safety before embarking on trips, with incidents involving caravans or trailers responsible for 1,400 injuries in 2006.
The DVD features demonstrations on how to correctly attach the vehicle being towed and how to maintain it.
"I was amazed when I discovered just how many towing-related incidents occurred on England's roads and how many fatalities and injuries resulted from them, not to mention the disruption they can cause," commented Smillie.
Roger Wright, Highways Agency technical advisor, urged drivers not to take their trailers out on the road before making sure they have had a maintenance check.
The Caravan Club has a range of information leaflets for those planning to travel safely with their caravans.
