"Yellow vultures" to target Hampshire speeders

Drivers who speed down a section of the M27 in Hampshire could find themselves facing more than a car insurance claim.

While work is taking place to widen the motorway, a number of cameras have been erected on top of long yellow poles to check the speed of passing drivers.

Motorists who travel at over 50 mph will be penalised if caught by the cameras, which have been dubbed "yellow vultures", the Southern Daily Echo reports.

According to the Highways Agency, the cameras have been erected for the safety of those carrying out work on the road.

A spokeswoman commented: "We use safety cameras, including average speed cameras, to enforce speed limits at roadworks where road speeds are lowered and drivers are likely to speed.

"Essentially, the cameras are used to protect the workforce, motorists, and keep traffic moving through the roadworks."

The work is expected to continue for 15 months and cost more than £35 million.
