Greater Manchester Police have announced that they have halved the number of burglaries in Wigan where vehicles are stolen.

According to the constabulary, a number of key offenders in Wigan and Leigh have been arrested as part of Operation Mat.

Between November 1st 2007 and January 31st 2008, 36 such incidents took place. This is down from the 71 events that occurred during the same period in 2006-07, equating to a 49 per cent reduction.

Chief Inspector Jo Rogerson of Greater Manchester Police's Wigan Division said: "A large number of vehicles stolen during burglaries are later used in other crimes, so the success of this operation has had a real impact."

She went on to state that Britons could deter criminals by protecting their properties through locks, sensor lights and alarms.

Meanwhile, police in the local Stockport area claim to have reduced car thefts by 40 per cent.
