Police in Essex have been clamping down on motorists who commit crimes such as driving without car insurance cover.

The recent three-day operation saw Police Community Support Officers team up with an officer from Laindon Road Policing Unit to carry out stop checks on drivers in the area.

Over the period of time, 62 offences were detected, with 42 motorists found to be driving without wearing a seatbelt and nine people discovered to have no road tax.

Another two were without car insurance cover, while the same number were seen talking on their handheld mobile phones.

Police Community Support Officer Julie Sach, one of the officers in charge of the operation, commented: "The aim was to raise awareness regarding using mobile phones while driving and the wearing seat belts in order to reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused."

In related news, motorists in the Essex town of Uttlesford could be set to incur more expensive parking costs if plans are approved, according to the Saffron Walden Reporter.
