Young drivers 'splash out on car enhancers'

Young motorists are splurging the cash on enhancements for their cars, with new sound systems and engine modifications topping the list of wants.
Research from Halifax Unsecured Personal Loans shows that 20 per cent of 17 to 24-year-old drivers have spent more than £500 on upgrades in the past 12 months.
This compares to 35 per cent of car owners across all age groups who have paid for improvements in the last year, with the average spend standing at £617.
And it seems most motorists would rather splash out on modifications for their car than buy a new one, with just three per cent saying they replace their vehicle every year and 11 per cent saying they would keep their current car for ten years or more.
As well as new in-car stereos and engine improvements, popular upgrade choices also included satellite navigation systems, new wheels and fresh paintwork.
The popular MTV show Pimp My Ride, which sees a team of experts carry out impressive makeovers on dilapidated vehicles, could be behind the desire for young drivers to modify their cars.
