Comprehensive car insurance 'vital for drivers abroad'

Drivers planning to get behind the wheel while on holiday are being urged to inform their car insurance provider well ahead of their leaving date.
Motorists should ensure they are comprehensively covered before embarking on car journeys overseas, Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, has advised.
He stated that many insurers will provide third party cover for those driving abroad in the event that a driver strikes another car or someone's property.
But he warned motorists who do not invest in comprehensive cover: "If you have ... [an] accident, you will be responsible for meeting the cost of recovering your vehicle and the cost of other losses. You might also be stung for meeting any costs for police, fire service [or] ambulance attendance."
He concluded: "So the message is, call your insurer in good time before you go."
Research by insurer Zurich has shown that 28 per cent of UK drivers who head overseas do not check their insurance cover to see if they are covered in their destination.
