The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has announced that it is clamping down on bogus driving instructors.
Britons learning to drive are being urged to check that their instructor is fully qualified, as those who are not are committing a crime by taking money for services they are not registered to give.
The Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) Federation registrar, Charles Morton, commented: "Illegal instructors are a danger to the public as they have not been assessed by us to ensure that they are able to provide driving instruction to the required standard."
He added that bogus instructors may also not have the correct car insurance cover should an accident take place.
"Using an illegal instructor could cost you more time and money and mean that you are not as safe on the road as you might be," he warned, suggesting that drivers look out for a pink or green certificate in their windscreen for proof of occupation.
It was recently announced that the cost of taking the driving test is to increase this year.
