Speeding campaign catches out dozens

A new rural speeding campaign launched in Northamptonshire has caught dozens of drivers breaking speed restrictions in the district of Corby.

Police community support officers have been using a new hand-held speed gun to tackle speeding in rural areas and of the 500 they have checked 28 have been issued with tickets, the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph reports.

The crackdown was launched after locals raised concerns about the speed at which some vehicles were travelling through their towns and villages.

PCSO Phil Beckett told the newspaper: "We're doing what the community asked us to do. It's had excellent results. The aim isn't just to catch motorists speeding it's to slow down traffic on rural roads."

According to the road safety charity Brake more than half of all fatal car crashes occur on rural roads.

It claims that despite hazards such blind corners, pot holes and fallen branches some motorists continue to drive too fast on rural roads, putting lives and car insurance premiums at risk.
