More consumers are favouring the internet to buy their auto insurance in the US, comScore has reported.

There was a 37 per cent increase in the number of motorists purchasing insurance policies on the internet in 2007 over the previous 12 months.

Over two million drivers utilised the internet to procure motor insurance in 2007 while only 1.5 million went online to get car insurance in 2006.

ComScore vice president, Kevin Levitt, said: "Consumers are demanding the freedom to choose their method for interacting with their auto insurer – whether online, by phone, or in person."

The increasing trend of online insurance purchases followed an initial usage of the internet for information about car insurance, the report also revealed.

Car insurance holders should decipher the jargon and check the small print of their policies to avoid voiding their policies and ensure they are aware of the insurers' correct procedures to follow, the Sun newspaper has recommended.
