Drivers 'increasingly looking for eco-friendly cars'

A growing number of British motorists are searching for cars with environmentally-friendly features, new research has revealed.

Almost a quarter of drivers who intend to buy a new car this year said they are looking for a vehicle with more eco-friendly credentials, the survey by AA Personal Loans found.

This compared with the six per cent of drivers who said the same in January 2006. Perhaps surprisingly, however, Londoners were found to be less likely than others to consider a car with green specifications - despite congestion charging in the city.

"The research shows that green is the new black for many motorists," commented Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans.

"Car buyers now realise that 'green' cars mean 'lean' cars with better fuel economy and cheaper tax discs."

The research follows the Budget announcement earlier this week that drivers with highly polluting cars are set to be heavily penalised in terms of tax from next year.
