Motor insurance holders customers looking to buy a used car might benefit from advice offered by an expert from the RAC.

Speaking to Auto Express, John Gregory, technical adviser at the RAC, said that there a number of things drivers can do to double check the safety and quality of a second-hand car.

Motorists should check the car's Vehicle Identification Number, which is usually marked in several places on the car, against the logbook, he commented, highlighting that many drivers fail to do so.

When inspecting tyres, drivers could do well to examine them for cracks and abnormal wear as well as tread depth, Mr Gregory said, while brakes should be tested both on the road and through a visual inspection.

Meanwhile, it is important to double check that the car's electronics work well, he remarked.

"Turn on the ignition and watch the warning lights illuminate. They should all come on, so if the vehicle has ABS and stability control fitted, those indicators will also show," Mr Gregory commented.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 7.4 million used cars were sold in the UK last year.
