Hard shoulder users urged to be wary

A motoring organisation is urging drivers to be cautious when using the M42 hard shoulder.

The Highways Agency recently announced that the speed limit on the hard shoulder would be increased to 60 mph over a two and a half mile stretch of road, but Green Flag has commented that drivers unsure of the change could cause problems on the roads.

"Incorrect use of hard shoulder running lanes by motorists who are unsure of the rules or who are rushing to get from A to B could have severe implications for road safety, especially during dangerous road and weather conditions, such as fog, which can seriously impair motorists' reactions," stated Gary Amos, spokesperson for Green Flag.

He added that hard shoulders should only be used in such a way during peak times to ease congestion.

Meanwhile, the Highways Agency has commented that safety will be paramount to the scheme.
