Motorists in the Fulwood area of Lancashire could find themselves less likely to need to make a claim on their car insurance as a result of a new tool in the crackdown on car crime.

A new marked police car and equipment is being purchased for the local force by Unity FM and One Voice radio stations in a bid to clamp down on gang and vehicle crime, the Preston and Leyland Citizen reports.

The model is fitted with special technology that uses automatic number plate recognition to identify vehicles and their owners.

DCI Marc Vincent of Preston Police said: "We are extremely grateful for this support from both Unity FM and One Voice Neighbourhood Management Boards and I would like to thank all those that have supported us during the funding process."

He added that the car would help achieve the priority of reducing vehicle crime and overcoming the threat posed by local gangs.

Officers in the county also recently launched a crackdown on the illegal sale of car parts and unroadworthy vehicles.
