Thousands of home insurance claims have been generated by this month's storms, it has been claimed.

According to Sainsbury's Bank, this is twice as worrying because research has shown that ten per cent of adults have not invested in home contents cover, while five per cent of homeowners are without buildings insurance.

Neil Laird, home insurance manager, Sainsbury's Finance, said: "Bad weather is increasingly the culprit when it comes to damage to homes and really highlights the importance of having adequate cover in place."

He went on to urge those affected by the storms to contact their insurer as soon as possible if their home or car has been damaged and avoid delaying the claim.

The Guardian recently claimed that insurers were bracing themselves for claims worth hundreds of millions of pounds following the storms this month; with the Association of British Insurers saying it is too early to name a figure.
