The type of car a motorist drives could impact upon their social life, a study has shown.

According to findings by used car hypermarket Carcraft, drivers of the Mini Cooper have been shown to be the friendliest in terms of online social networking.

Some 20,000 Mini Cooper drivers were found to network across more than 300 groups relating to their vehicle on social website Facebook.

Barry Nightingale, managing director at Carcraft, said: "It is interesting to see that cars are not only viewed as a symbol of wealth and status but they are increasingly becoming a crucial part of people's identity and social life."

The Honda Civic took second place in the research with 187 fan groups on Facebook, while the Ford Fiesta followed in third place.

In related news, Mini was recently named Fleet News' Best Small Car 2008 as a result of its use of fuel-efficient technology and good residual values.
