Drivers who keep high-value gadgets in their cars have been warned that they could be putting their possessions at risk of theft.

According to research by car insurance provider swiftcover.com, 96 per cent of UK motorists admit to regularly leaving hi-tech items in their vehicles.

One-third of these leave their gadgets on display, with 21 per cent stating that they have suffered from car break-ins and thefts as a result.

Tina Shortle, marketing director of swiftcover.com, said that keeping items such as mp3 players, digital cameras and mobile phones in cars is "a thief's dream".

"They are easy to snatch, easy to conceal and because they are desirable items, easy to sell on. A thief could be in a car and away with a pocketful of expensive kit within seconds," she remarked.

"It's a bonanza for our light-fingered foes."

Last year, research by Fool.co.uk found that UK homes contain some £23 billion worth of unused or obsolete gadgets.
