A new survey has suggested that the Porsche 911 is the 1980s car Britons most dream of owning.

Conducted by HPI, the poll saw 29 per cent of respondents vote for the sleek car, narrowly beating the Audi Quattro, which received 28 per cent of the vote.

Other cars that featured in the survey included the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth (15 per cent) and the BMW M5 (12 per cent).

The poll also revealed that Britons fondly remember the Ford Capri SLE 71R used in Minder as the best TV car in the 1980s.

Nick Lindsay of HPI commented: "The success of Ashes to Ashes and the proposed remake of Minder have piqued people's interest in 1980s cars again," adding: "Many of these vehicles are highly desirable classics."

The Porsche 911 was first launched during the 1960s and has seen success in various racing and rallying competitions over the years.
