Young drivers to learn skills in Wokingham

Young people in Wokingham are being given the opportunity to learn how to drive safely and potentially avoid car insurance claims.

The borough has launched a one-day workshop under the banner Motivation on April 16th to be attended by interested 15 to 19-year-olds.

Among the topics to be covered as part of the scheme will be the legal requirements involved in driving, the hazards that new motorists face and the impact on close family and friends when a young driver has a car accident.

Wokingham borough council is organising the event, along with the Highways Agency, the Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Rob McDonnell, senior traffic management engineer, said: "The workshops offer participants a lot of valuable help, including the opportunity to experience what it's like to drive a motor vehicle in a controlled and safe surrounding - the first chance that many participants will have to drive a real car."

In related news, a scheme for young drivers in Thames Valley was recently launched by Prince Michael of Kent. Under the initiative, motorists under the age of 20 who commit a motoring offence are allowed to attend a course rather than pay a £60 fine and receive three penalty points.
