Millions of UK drivers would welcome the introduction of 20 mph speed limits in residential areas of London, a study has shown.
According to research by vehicle supermarket Motorpoint, two in five drivers - equating to about 12 million - would support such a move, as recently suggested by London mayor Ken Livingstone.
Portsmouth recently applied a 20 mph maximum speed limit in urban areas and suggestions have been made that Norwich could implement a similar scheme, which could help motorists avoid car insurance claims as a result of speeding.
Motorpoint managing director David Shelton said that while many customers take an interest in road safety, asking about features such as electronic stability control at car-buying time, it was astonishing to see how many would support lower speed limits.
"We were surprised at the extent to which people seem ready to accept a lower speed limit in residential areas, particularly when government TV advertising is still trying to persuade more people to abide by the 30mph limit," he stated.
