MoD looks to cut road accident rates

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is set to begin research into driver behaviour by installing a monitoring device in vehicles used by its personnel.

An in-vehicle sensor created by GreenRoad will record details of 120 different driving manoeuvres before analysing the data and giving the driver feedback on their skills.

Some 200 vehicles will be used for the sample, which is to run over a six-month period.

"As part of our commitment to duty of care, we have an obligation for the safety of all MoD personnel - whether they are drivers or passengers," commented Major Shepherd, MoD road safety officer.

Earlier findings have shown that GreenRoad clients see their accident rate reduced by 54 per cent and their accidents costs cut by 65 per cent - potentially also helping them to avoid potential car insurance claims.

"The MoD understands the challenges in modifying driver behaviour to reduce accident rates," stated Aidan Rowsome, vice president of GreenRoad.

Using the system can also help fleets cut their fuel usage by seven per cent, the firm's website states.
