Fewer speeding fines for Highlands' drivers

Fewer Scottish car insurance holders may have risked a claim by speeding, with fines for the offence dropping in number recently.

The Scotsman reports that speed cameras netted 114,107 motorists breaking the law in this way between 2006 and 2007, generating £6.8 million in revenue.

Meanwhile, the Highlands saw a reduction of 20 per cent in the number of fines being issued to speeding motorists.

Some motoring groups have commented, however, that the reduction is a result of drivers knowing the sites of speed cameras.

Bruce Young, the Lothian and Borders co-ordinator of the Association of British Drivers, said: "Drivers are increasingly aware of both fixed and mobile camera locations."

Meanwhile, Neil Greig, director for Scotland of the Institute of Advanced Motorists' Motoring Trust, said: "There are many reasons why ticket numbers are falling - drivers are getting the safety message in towns, camera sites are now well known and drivers with some points on their licence are being extra careful."
