Campaign launched to cut car crime

Police in North Yorkshire have launched an initiative that could help cut vehicle and subsequent car insurance claims.

The operation has been dubbed Scream, with each letter of the word standing for a word or phrase, the Nidderdale Herald reports.

Scream can be made from the following words and phrases put together: Sustainable Crime Reduction by Educating At risk Motorists.

Vehicle crime in the Pateley Bridge and Ripon areas are set to fall under the campaign's remit, with motorists being urged to make sure that their vehicles are secure and that possessions are not left on view.

Officers on patrol will be looking out for vehicles where items have been left on display and will take any car details before sending a letter to the owner warning them of the potential perils they face.

Police have advised drivers to always store their belongings in the boot of their car where they are out sight, rather than where they can be seen by passers-by.

They add that it is best for motorists to keep their belongings with them rather than in the car.
