Drivers look to greener cars

A new survey has revealed that two-thirds of new car buyers are looking for a vehicle with environmentally-friendly credentials.

Nearly half of these said they were searching for a greener car for money reasons, while 19 per cent cited the need to be more eco-friendly, the poll by What Car? found.

What Car? group editor Steve Fowler said that the findings indicated that the rising cost of living and relatively lower wages are continuing to affect consumers' finances.

He went on to add that even those not planning to buy a new car can go green by following advice such as driving at lower speeds to reduce fuel consumption and refraining from using multiple in-car gadgets at once.

"Even if you aren't planning to buy a new car soon, motorists can still do their bit for their environment," Mr Fowler commented.

The Department for Transport recently announced the launch of a new scheme that requires all road fuels to contain 2.5 per cent biofuel matter.
