Car insurance customers' confidence could be boosted by figures showing two-thirds of motorists would back a cut in the UK drink drive limit.
A poll from the AA says the legal limit should be slashed to the equivalent of less than a pint of beer.
This would bring the UK into line with the rest of Europe and also supports the view some drivers have that the limit should go from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg.
Quoted in the Mirror president of the AA Edmund King said: "There is now widespread support for a reduction."
According to the Guardian the poll of 17,500 drivers showed two-thirds were in favour of lowering the limit.
Car insurance policy holders wanting to avoid accidents could also be encouraged by the fact nearly a third of those who took part wanted a zero limit.
The Guardian also quoted a Department for Transport spokesman as saying a consultation on drink driving was planned for later this year.
