Police root out uninsured drivers

A police operation in Hertfordshire has seen a number of drivers caught out for travelling without car insurance.

Officers utilised automatic number plate reading technology on the M1 near Watford last week to check which cars were being driven while uninsured, the Hendon Times reports.

More than 31 cars were seized and a number of arrests were made as a result of the operation. Inspector Paul Cleevely of the Met's traffic operational command unit warned that those who drive without car insurance are dangerous to all users of the road.

“Seizing people's vehicles and taking them away removes this danger and acts as a deterrent to anyone planning to chance their arm by not paying their insurance,” he added.

According to Sainsbury's Bank, 1.15 million Britons have driven without car insurance in the past year - a practice that is against UK law.
