Drivers 'want small, efficient cars'

More motorists are opting to buy smaller and more efficient vehicles than previously, it has been claimed.
Greater numbers of car buyers are searching for motors with smaller engines and lower prices - such as the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, Peugeot 107 and Volkswagen Polo - than they were this time last year, according to JustGoodCars.com.
Meanwhile, more car owners are putting expensive luxury cars up for sale, the website said.
Andrew Sobell, sales and marketing director at JustGoodCars.com, said there was a definite trend for downsizing among UK car owners.
Surprisingly, hybrid vehicles do not appear to be high on the current desirability list. Petrol models are also searched for more than diesel models, he added.
According to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, year-to-date vehicle production volumes have risen by 10.7 per cent so far in 2008 compared with last year.
