Motorists 'should prepare for driving abroad'

Drivers thinking of taking their cars overseas this summer have been advised to begin preparing for their holidays as soon as possible.

As part of its advice to drivers, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has said that Britons should take a number of factors into account, including getting used to driving on the other side of the road in Europe.

The organisation urges motorists to remember to 'think right - look left' when approaching a junction or roundabout.

Drivers should also brush up on the road rules of the relevant country and be aware of regulations that are different to those in the UK, such as Germany's low emission zones, which now apply to cars as well as commercial vehicles.

According to research by Halifax, more than 17.5 million Britons take a road trip holiday every year, with each motorist driving for 861 miles on average.
