The car industry can lead a world revolution in technology by developing eco-friendly innovations, one consultant has said.

Ricardo project director for clean energy Giles Hundleby told a Belgian conference car makers have the "engineering competence" to create greener engines and other systems.

Several cars already on the market use technology like hybrid engines, which combine fuel and electric systems to cut emissions.

Mr Hundleby told the Cleantech Forum XVII in Brussels: "The automotive industry has the engineering competence and consumer product design and integration skills to make a significant contribution to the green tech revolution."

His comments could be of interest to car insurance customers waiting for a greater range of eco-friendly and zero emissions cars to be widely available.

Ricardo uses its worldwide network of offices and technology centres to develop engine, software and electronic systems.

Cleantech is a worldwide networking group promoting the discussion and development of greener technology in industry.
