Drivers are starting to avoid using the phone in favour of the searching the internet when looking for car insurance, a new survey suggests.

Web analysis firm comScore said 15 per cent of 2,000 American drivers surveyed in March had bought their current policy online, a rise of three per cent on the same period last year.

ComScore vice president Kevin Levitt said people's habits appeared to be altering quickly as internet usage increased.

He said the findings showed the industry landscape "is beginning to change, with more and more consumers turning from traditional, offline channels to the internet.".

The research also showed people were now more inclined to look on the internet than pick up the phone after seeing a car insurance advert.

The survey results were based on a poll of more than 2,000 internet users and is part of the 2008 comScore Online Automobile Insurance Report.

Recent government research from the UK has shown internet use has been boosted by the popularity of broadband, which is now the way 88 per cent of UK residents connect to the web.
