Chamber attacks work parking charge

A city council's plans to introduce charges for workplace parking spaces have been attacked by a business leader.
Nottingham city council is developing plans to charge 75 pence for each business space per day in an effort to cut congestion.
Nottingham's chamber of commerce said the idea was a form of tax and would fail in its attempt to get commuters to use public transport.
Chamber chief executive George Cowcher told Channel 4 News he though the local authority had "tunnel vision" on the idea and thought it was the only way of getting extra cash for transport improvements.
The charge could hit the pockets of construction and courier firms using fleets of vehicles and already paying for road tax, fuel and
van insurance.
The charge is set to arrive in 2010 and will affect city workplaces with ten or more parking spaces.
If the scheme goes ahead it will be the first of its type in the UK, according to the Telegraph.
