Car experts have released a basic top ten tips guide for used car buyers and warned against buying vehicles with potentially dangerous faults.

The RAC said some used cars have a "secret past" and unveiled the Inspection Buyers' Checklist.

Advice includes making sure buyers carefully inspect the interior of used cars and carry out checks on number plates to ensure vehicles aren't registered as stolen or written off.

Manager of RAC inspections Nicola Johnson said: "Take time to assess your dream car. This will help you spot the tell tale warning signs of potential problems."

She added potential buyers should ensure they arrange used car viewings during the day and also suggested they take a friend or family member who can provide impartial advice.

Other RAC tips include checking the tyres and bodywork and not "getting emotionally attached" to the car while making a decision.

The firm said thorough checks may identify hidden problems which could cause accidents, at worst resulting in injury and at best ending up in a claim on any new car insurance policy taken out after buying the car.

The AA also advises used car buyers check that the mileage clock total of the vehicle roughly matches its age, to prevent them becoming victims of "clocking".
