Speeding 'tops driving offences'

Speeding is by far the most common driving offence committed by British motorists, statistics show.

Auto Express reports that figures from the Ministry of Justice show exceeding limits accounts for 40 per cent of all driving crimes.

Fixed cameras appear the most effective method of snaring drivers, with the technology accounting for the vast majority of around two million tickets given out in 2006.

The magazine reports: "The government report says only one offence actually increased from 2005 to 2006 - careless driving was up by 26 per cent."

This figure is likely to be a result of the crackdown on the use of mobile phones at the wheel, which followed a change in the law in 2003.

Drivers caught speeding face fines, points on their licences and a rise in their car insurance premiums.

Officers have already handed out tickets for more than 1,000 offences on a single-road campaign in Croydon, London, this month.

The Croydon Guardian reports traffic officers are running a crackdown on the A23 until May 30th and are stopping drivers seen speeding and using mobile phones at the wheel.
