Dozens of drivers caught on phones

In the space of a month, police in one area have caught 60 drivers using mobile phones
while at the wheel.
After recording the March total, Northamptonshire officers issued warnings, saying
they would continue to punish motorists who ignore the rules.
According to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, if the current rate continues, more
Northamptonshire drivers could be caught making a call at the wheel than last year's
total of 736.
Quoted by the paper, superintendent Mark Lacey said: "There are known links
between using mobile phones at the wheel and serious injury accidents and
Northamptonshire police will continue to enforce the law."
Drivers who are caught face points on their licence, a fine and could also see their
car insurance costs rise.
In Scotland alone, around 20,000 drivers were spotted flouting the law and making a
call in the first 24 months after the 2003 ban.
According to CNET, Strathclyde police recorded the highest total during this period,
issuing tickets to 10,058 people for the offence.
