Most drivers 'distracted' by speed cameras

Most British motorists feel they are driven to distraction by the nation's network of speed cameras, a survey has shown.

Statistics released by RoadPilot say 53 per cent of road users think their attention is diverted from the road ahead while they look out for camera traps.

The poll also showed a third will hit the brakes instinctively upon seeing a camera, posing a risk to cars following behind.

Road Pilot chief executive officer James Flynn said: "It is worrying that many people think speed cameras are having an adverse effect on their driving, especially given they were introduced as a means of improving road safety in the first place."

His firm has just released what it claims is the world's smallest GPS-based speed camera locator, the microGo, measuring five by six centimetres.

The RoadPilot speed camera poll was run on automotive website NewCarNet.co.uk and attracted a sample of 680 people.

Drivers caught by speed cameras face fines, points on their licences and a possible increase in their car insurance premiums.

There are around 6,000 speed cameras in the UK, about 2,500 of which are mobile cameras, according to Speed Cameras UK.
