UK homeowners are to be helped to go green with a government programme which could see loan schemes developed for people to buy energy-saving technology.
The Independent reports the plans are expected to be part of a drive to promote domestic solar and wind power gadgets.
People selling generated power back to the national grid could get premium payment prices as part of the scheme.
Quoted by the paper, Friends of the Earth head of campaigns Mike Childs said: "If the UK became a genuine leader in developing a low carbon economy, the economic and employment benefits would be huge."
Poorer households are likely to welcome government-backed methods of reducing household bills as the UK experiences an economic slowdown.
According to a survey released by the Halifax yesterday, some people are trying to add value to their homes by making DIY improvements as house prices level out.
However, experts warned families to consult professionals if unsure about some DIY work to avoid invalidating
home insurance policies.
