A company says the UK's drivers could save £290 in fuel each year by adopting more economical driving habits.
Insurer Swiftcover has put together ten top tips for driving down fuel costs, including reducing weight and avoiding the rush hour.
The firm said petrol is now the third largest monthly expense for UK families, behind mortgage payments and food, and encouraged motorists to consider eco driving tactics.
Tina Shortle from the company said: "Simple things like taking excess weight out of the boot, limiting heavy braking and keeping your car serviced can have a huge effect on cutting your fuel bill."
Swiftcover also said drivers are looking at switching
car insurance provider, with 195,000 a week changing their insurer to save money.
Other petrol use reduction tips include changing gear early and cutting out short journeys.
Earlier this month the AA said it was seeing more call-outs from drivers who have run out of petrol as people try to shop around more when low on fuel.
